# Lead magnet

**Definition.** A lead magnet is a free, useful resource a business offers in exchange for a visitor's email address: a short guide, checklist, template, workbook or sample chapter. Its job is to start a relationship with someone who has a specific problem, so the best ones solve one narrow problem quickly and lead naturally to what the business sells.

## How it works

A visitor enters their email on a landing page, the resource arrives by download link or email, and they join a list that hears from you afterwards. The giveaway is the easy part; the follow-up is where US law applies. Under the CAN-SPAM Act, each commercial email you send must identify itself as an advertisement, tell people how to opt out, and include a valid physical postal address, and opt-out requests must be honored within 10 business days. The FTC's rule also bars asking for a fee or for anything beyond an email address and preferences to opt out.

## An example

A bookkeeper offers a two-page month-end close checklist in exchange for an email address. It is narrow, useful the same day, and it shows how she works. Her follow-up emails offering a paid service carry an unsubscribe link and her business's postal address, and anyone who unsubscribes is off the list within days.

## Common mistakes

Making it broad and long, when a reader wanted one answer quickly. Asking for many form fields up front. And treating the list as a license to send anything: commercial emails without an opt-out notice or postal address fall foul of the CAN-SPAM Act, whatever the reader signed up for.

## Questions

**Is a lead magnet the same as an ebook?** It can be a short ebook, but it is defined by its job, not its format: a free resource that earns an email address. Checklists, templates and workbooks often work better than long books.

**Can I email people who downloaded my lead magnet?** Yes, that is the point of one. In the US, commercial emails must identify themselves as advertising, explain how to opt out, include your postal address, and stop within 10 business days of an opt-out.
