# Low-content book

**Definition.** A low-content book is a print book with little or no content on its interior pages, usually repetitive and designed to be filled in by the buyer: notebooks, planners, diaries, prompt journals and log books. KDP lets low-content books publish without an ISBN, but they can't use a free KDP ISBN.

## How it works

When you set up the paperback or hardcover, you tick the Low-content box under Categories in the book's details, then, under Print ISBN, either use your own ISBN or publish without one. The choice changes the barcode on the back cover, and KDP doesn't offer a release date for low-content books. KDP's examples draw the line by content, not looks: notebooks, planners, log books, score card and crafting templates, and blank sheet music are low-content; novels, nonfiction, puzzle books, manuals, textbooks and children's books generally aren't.

## An example

A habit tracker that repeats the same weekly grid for a year is low-content. A workbook that teaches a skill in each chapter and leaves space for exercises is not, because its pages carry instruction; it reads like nonfiction, which KDP lists as not generally low-content. Publishing the tracker without an ISBN is fine on Amazon, but it then has no identifier for selling anywhere else.

## Common mistakes

Forgetting the Low-content box: KDP says a low-content book without it, or with a different box ticked, will be rejected. Marking a teaching workbook as low-content to skip the ISBN. Expecting a free KDP ISBN for a journal. And enrolling a lined notebook in Expanded Distribution, whose distributors don't accept books with frequent lined or blank pages.

## Questions

**Do low-content books need an ISBN on KDP?** No. You can publish without an ISBN or use one you bought. KDP's free ISBNs aren't available for low-content books.

**Is a puzzle book low-content?** Generally not. KDP lists puzzle books among the books that are not generally low-content, because their pages aren't repetitive blanks to fill in.
