# Publish an AI-Assisted Book on Amazon KDP

KDP asks you to tell it when a book contains AI-generated text, images or translations. Here is the whole publishing process, with the AI-specific steps and the limits that matter, as KDP's help pages state them.

By Shri and Sarath · Published October 11, 2026 · 6 min read

Publishing an AI-assisted book on KDP is the same process as publishing any other book, plus one question about AI. This guide walks through it in order. Every KDP rule below comes from KDP's own help pages, read on 2026-10-11. KDP changes its rules, so treat the figures as of that date and confirm them in KDP before you publish.

## Step 1: Know which category your book falls in

KDP's content guidelines draw one line. **AI-generated content** is text, images or translations created by an AI-based tool. **AI-assisted** is content you created yourself and used AI tools only to edit, refine or error-check; KDP says you don't need to tell it about that.

- Chapters a tool wrote from your material are AI-generated text.
- A cover made by an image tool is an AI-generated image.
- A translation made by a tool is an AI-generated translation.
- Your own writing tightened by a grammar or editing tool is AI-assisted.

These examples apply KDP's definitions to common cases. If one doesn't fit your situation clearly, ask KDP support rather than guessing.

## Step 2: Disclose AI-generated content

KDP's guidelines say it requires you to inform it of AI-generated content (text, images or translations) when you publish a new book or republish an edited one. It also says you are responsible for checking that all AI-generated and AI-assisted content follows the content guidelines.

The guidelines page doesn't say whether the disclosure is shown to readers, so don't assume either way. A sensible habit, and only that: keep your source material and drafts for every title, so you can answer a question about how the book was made.

## Step 3: Respect the limits and the quality rules

KDP limits how many new titles you can create: up to 2 titles per book format each week, counted separately for ebook, paperback and hardcover. The limit resets every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC, and updates to titles you have already submitted don't count.

KDP's guidelines also exclude content that is freely available on the web (unless you own it or it is in the public domain), content not significantly different from another book in the Kindle Store, and content excessively repeated within or across books. KDP says it rejects or removes content that doesn't follow its guidelines, tells you if a title is removed, and lets you appeal.

AI makes near-duplicate books easy to produce, which is exactly what those rules describe. Each title should contain something a reader can't get by asking a chatbot the title as a question: your examples, your method, your material.

## Step 4: Prepare the manuscript

For an ebook, upload an EPUB or a DOCX. KDP's help pages describe both as supported; an EPUB gives you more predictable formatting, and complex DOCX files may not convert as well. Preview the file before you publish (KDP provides Kindle Previewer and an online previewer) and fix anything odd: a table of contents that doesn't navigate, stretched images, stray blank pages.

SuperEbook exports a PDF, an EPUB and a DOCX of every book. The EPUB is the file to upload to KDP. It doesn't produce print-ready paperback files for text books, so for a paperback take the DOCX to a formatting tool and check KDP's paperback guidelines.

## Step 5: Write the listing

- **Title.** It should be the title as it appears on your cover. KDP's title and subtitle together must be under 200 characters, and the title can't refer to sales rank or promotions (a claim about sales rank, or the word "free", are KDP's own examples).
- **Description.** Up to 4,000 characters, and HTML tags count toward that limit. KDP supports line breaks, paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, h4 to h6 headings and lists, but not h1 to h3.
- **Keywords.** Up to seven keywords or short phrases. Don't use other authors' names, brands you don't own, or subjective quality claims.
- **Categories.** You can select 3 when you create a book.

SuperEbook's free listing kit writes a KDP description, keywords and categories from your finished book. Treat them as a first draft and check them against the limits above.

## Step 6: Make the cover

KDP's ebook cover page says to use a TIFF or JPEG, with ideal dimensions of 2,560 pixels tall by 1,600 wide, a minimum of 1,000 by 625, and a height-to-width ratio of at least 1.6:1. A cover made with an image tool counts as an AI-generated image for your disclosure. Check the cover at a small size too: large type and strong contrast read better in search results.

## Step 7: Price it and understand the royalty

| Option | What you earn | Delivery cost | List price on Amazon.com |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 70% | 70% of (list price minus delivery cost) | $0.15 per MB | $2.99 to $12.99 (since July 7, 2026) |
| 35% | 35% of list price | None | $0.99 to $200; the minimum depends on file size |

KDP ebook royalty options on Amazon.com, as of 2026-10-11

The 70% option has other eligibility conditions, for example it is for in-copyright works only and applies only in the territories on KDP's pricing page. Worked example at $9.99: a 3 MB file earns $6.68 per sale on the 70% option, and a 20 MB file earns $4.89, because the delivery cost comes off before the 70%. Taxes in other territories change the figures. The [Kindle royalty calculator](https://www.superebook.ai/tools/kindle-royalty-calculator.md) does the sum for any price and file size.

Paperbacks pay a 50% or 60% royalty depending on list price (on Amazon.com, 60% at $9.99 and above, 50% at $9.98 and below), minus printing cost. Expanded Distribution pays 40% of list price minus printing cost. KDP pays royalties about 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale was reported (Expanded Distribution, about 90 days).

## Step 8: Decide on KDP Select

KDP Select makes your ebook exclusive to KDP (and public libraries) for each 90-day enrollment period, and the book is then included in Kindle Unlimited. During that period you can't distribute the digital book anywhere else, a PDF on Gumroad or your own site included. Print editions can still be sold elsewhere, and KDP lets you make up to 10% of the book available elsewhere as a sample. If you plan to sell the ebook on your own site, publish without Select.

## Step 9: Submit and wait

KDP's timelines page says titles are typically reviewed and published within 24 to 72 hours, and that some content types take longer; it gives 3 to 4 weeks for low-content books. Don't announce a launch date until the status says the book is live.

> **What we couldn't verify** We haven't confirmed how KDP enforces the AI disclosure, whether it detects undisclosed AI text, or what it does with repeat problems. KDP's page says only that non-compliant content is rejected or removed. Declare honestly and keep your records.

**Do this now**

- [ ] Decide which parts of the book are AI-generated: text, images, translations.
- [ ] Declare each of them in KDP when you set up the title.
- [ ] Check you are within 2 new titles per format this week.
- [ ] Upload an EPUB or DOCX and fix everything the previewer flags.
- [ ] Check the title against the cover; keep the description under 4,000 characters; use up to seven keywords and 3 categories.
- [ ] Size the cover to at least 1,000 by 625 pixels, ideally 2,560 by 1,600.
- [ ] Work out the 70% royalty at your price and file size before you set the price.
- [ ] Choose between KDP Select and selling elsewhere before you publish the ebook.

## Questions

**Does KDP allow AI-generated books?** KDP's content guidelines require you to inform it of AI-generated content (text, images or translations) when you publish a new book or republish an edited one. They don't ban AI-generated content outright, but you are responsible for making sure it follows all the content guidelines.

**Do I have to declare AI-assisted writing?** No. KDP says content you created yourself that uses AI tools only to edit, refine or error-check is AI-assisted, and you don't need to tell it about that. Text, images or translations created by an AI tool are AI-generated and must be disclosed.

**How many books can I publish on KDP per day?** KDP's current limit is weekly, not daily: up to 2 new titles per book format each week, counted separately for ebook, paperback and hardcover. The limit resets every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. Check KDP's Create a Book help page for any change.

**What does the 70% royalty option pay?** On Amazon.com the 70% option pays 70% of the list price minus a delivery cost of $0.15 per MB, for list prices from $2.99 to $12.99. The 35% option pays 35% of list price with no delivery cost. Other eligibility conditions apply.

**Can I use KDP Select and sell the ebook on Gumroad?** Not at the same time. During each 90-day KDP Select enrollment period the ebook must be exclusive to KDP (and public libraries). Print editions can still be sold elsewhere. Check KDP's current Select terms before you enroll.
