How to Sell Ebooks on Etsy: Fees and Rules

Etsy sells ebooks as digital downloads, with its own fees, file limits and rules about who made the item. Here is what its pages say, read on 2026-10-11, and how to prepare a book for it.

An ebook on Etsy is a digital listing: a buyer pays, then downloads the files. Etsy has fees to count, limits on the files, and a policy on who has to have made the item. This post sets out what Etsy's own pages say, as we read them on 2026-10-11. Policies and fees change, so check the current pages before you list.

What a digital listing is

Etsy's help article on digital listings describes two kinds: instant downloads, which are ready-made files the buyer can access immediately on purchase, and made-to-order downloads, which are custom files sent on completion. An ebook is normally the first kind. You choose Digital files when you answer what type of item it is.

  • Files per listing

    What the article says
    Up to five digital files
  • Size of each file

    What the article says
    20MB maximum
  • File names

    What the article says
Limited to 70 alphanumeric characters, periods, underscores or hyphens; buyers see the same names
  • Variations

    What the article says
    Not available for digital items
  • Buyer note

    What the article says
One note applies to all your digital listings and shows on the buyer's Downloads page

Five files of 20MB each fits a PDF and an EPUB of a text book easily. An image-heavy file may not; check the size before you plan the listing.

What it costs

Etsy's fees policy (last updated 05 Oct, 2026 when we read it) lists these fees, all exclusive of VAT or similar taxes:

  • Set-up fee: a one-time fee may be required to open a shop; it is shown during set-up and is non-refundable once paid.
  • Listing fee: 0.20 USD each time you create or renew a listing. Etsy.com listings expire after four months and auto-renew unless you switch that off.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the price you display, plus what you charge for delivery and gift wrapping.
  • Payment processing: varies with the location of your bank account; Etsy's Payments Policy lists it by country.
  • Offsite Ads: charged only if Etsy's advertising your listing directly results in a sale: 15%, or 12% once your shop has made 10,000 USD in sales over the prior 365 days, capped at 100 USD per order.

Example, built from those fees and not a forecast: on a $10.00 ebook the transaction fee is $0.65 and a listing is $0.20, so $0.85 before payment processing. If an Offsite Ads sale applied, 15% would be $1.50 more. Other deductions may apply, including payment processing and taxes, so run the sum for your own price and country.

On tax, the policy says Etsy calculates, collects and remits US sales tax on your behalf for US orders, and that under local laws in certain countries it collects and remits VAT on digital items delivered by automatic download. Outside those cases the policy says you are responsible for the taxes that apply to you.

The rules on who made it

Etsy's help article says digital items must be made and/or designed by you, the seller. Its Creativity Standards (last updated 10 Jun, 2025 when we read them) list "designed by a seller" items, which include original content you create and sell as a digital download, such as a text document.

On AI, the standards list seller-prompted AI creations, generated with AI tools from your original prompts, and say sellers must disclose within the listing description if an item is created with the use of AI. They name two things that do not qualify: AI prompt bundles, and a PDF file of a book that the seller did not personally create or design.

We can't tell you how Etsy applies this to a particular book. What follows from the text is practical: sell books built from your own material, say in the description that AI was used, and don't list a book you didn't make. If the question matters to you, read the standards and the guide on selling AI-generated ebooks first.

Preparing the book

SuperEbook plans an ebook for free (three title options, a brief and an editable outline) and writes nothing until you press Write. Each chapter is written from the passages of your uploaded material that fit it; it doesn't show which passage produced which paragraph, so read each chapter against your sources. It exports a PDF, an EPUB and a DOCX with the cover you choose (six options), full commercial rights and no watermark.

A free listing kit writes Etsy copy, and Gumroad copy, a KDP description, keywords and categories, from the finished book. Add the AI note to the description yourself and check the copy against Etsy's rules. Downloads need a paid plan or a credit pack ($20) bought from the book's page. To compare Etsy with other places to sell, see KDP vs Gumroad vs Etsy, and for choosing a price, ebook pricing strategy.
