How KDP royalties work

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing pays authors on one of two royalty options. Which one you can use depends entirely on your list price.

70% option (list price $2.99–$9.99):
royalty = (list price − $0.15 × file size in MB) × 0.70

35% option (any eligible price):
royalty = list price × 0.35

Worked example. A $9.99 book with a 3 MB file. The delivery fee is 0.15 × 3 = $0.45. So the 70% option pays (9.99 − 0.45) × 0.70 ≈ $6.68 per sale. The 35% option would pay 9.99 × 0.35 = $3.50 — so here, 70% wins by nearly double.

The lesson most new publishers miss: pricing a book at $10.00 pushes it out of the 70% band and cuts your royalty roughly in half. The $2.99–$9.99 window is where the math works in your favour.
