How to estimate page count
Publishers estimate printed length by dividing the manuscript’s word count by a words-per-page figure that depends on the book’s trim size (its physical dimensions).
words-per-page by trim:
250 — mass-market (4.25 × 6.87″)
280 — trade 5 × 8″
300 — trade 6 × 9″
320 — hardcover
Worked example. A 60,000-word nonfiction book at 6 × 9″ (300 words/page) comes to 60,000 ÷ 300 = 200 pages. The same manuscript at mass-market size (250 words/page) would print at 240 pages — the words don’t change, the page count does.
Page count feeds directly into print cost, spine width, and even how “substantial” a book feels to a buyer, so it’s worth deciding trim size early.
