KDP Select vs Going Wide: What to Weigh

KDP Select trades exclusivity for Kindle+, the subscription formerly called Kindle Unlimited, and two promotion tools. This guide lays out the terms as KDP's help pages state them, then a decision table, with our own judgment marked as ours.

By Shri and Sarath · 6 min read · Updated 23 October 2026 · Facts checked 23 October 2026

Every KDP fact below comes from KDP's own help pages, read on 2026-10-23, after Amazon renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ and added audiobooks to it in the US. KDP's pages now use the new name. Where a page is silent, this guide says so. KDP changes these terms, so open the linked pages before you enroll. "Going wide" is not a KDP term: here it means selling the ebook through other stores or your own site as well as Amazon.

What KDP Select is, and what it asks of you

KDP describes Select as "a free 90-day program for Kindle eBooks and audiobooks." Enrolling puts the ebook in Kindle+ automatically, and makes it eligible for Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals, which audiobooks can't use. All authors are eligible wherever they live.

The price is exclusivity. KDP's enrollment page says you "must have exclusive rights for the primary content of the Kindle eBook," that public domain content is not eligible, and that the ebook "must also be exclusive to the Kindle Store for the KDP Select enrollment period." It then states the rule most people care about: "During the 90-day enrollment period, the Kindle eBook can only be distributed through KDP and public libraries."

  • What stays open: KDP says you can continue to distribute print, video, or other formats of your title elsewhere. Only the ebook is held back.
  • Audiobooks: an audiobook made with virtual voice is enrolled with its ebook. An ACX audiobook can be enrolled too, if it is distributed exclusively through Audible, uses the Pay for Production model and has Whispersync for Voice turned on; KDP says that adds no KDP exclusivity to the title.
  • Renewal: every enrolled ebook is automatically renewed unless you opt out. Unchecking automatic renewal does not affect the current term.
  • Leaving: you can cancel within three days of the start of an enrollment period. After that, KDP's page says to contact KDP. Pre-order ebooks can't be cancelled until released.
  • Pausing: you can unpublish an enrolled title and republish it later, which pauses the enrollment period. The ebook must stay exclusive for the rest of the current 90-day term.

KDP's pages don't say how it checks for exclusivity. The Countdown Deals page does say that when a Kindle ebook is determined not to be exclusive, any scheduled Countdown Deals are cancelled.

What you get: Kindle+ and two promotions

Kindle+ is a subscription where customers read, and in the US listen to, enrolled books for a monthly fee. KDP says enrollment doesn't change how the book is sold on Amazon, so you continue to receive royalties on sales. The Kindle+ royalty is separate: KDP pays a share of the monthly KDP Select Global Fund, based on how many pages subscribers read or listen to for the first time. KDP says payouts depend on your share of total pages, so its pages can't tell you what any one book will receive.

KDP's KENP page says it counts pages with Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, calculated with standard formatting settings from the Start Reading Location, and that you can be credited for up to 3,000 normalized pages per title per customer. Our KENP calculator is built around that count.

    Up to 5 days
    Kindle Countdown Deal
One deal, 1 hour to 7 days
  • Where

    Free Book Promotion
    All KDP marketplaces
    Kindle Countdown Deal
    Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk only
  • Royalty during it

  • Other conditions

    Kindle Countdown Deal

You can use only one kind of promotion per enrollment period, and unused days don't roll over. KDP's page says nothing about how many readers a promotion brings, and neither do we. Select also makes the ebook eligible for the KDP Select bonus and the Amazon Literary Contest, which KDP lists under benefits.

What going wide means, and where KDP's pages stop

Not enrolling leaves the ebook free to sell elsewhere. You still publish it on KDP under the normal royalty options, and KDP's pages place no exclusivity condition on that. What you lose is access to Kindle+ page-read royalties, Free Book Promotions and Countdown Deals for that title. KDP's pages don't compare Select with other stores' programs, so a comparison with a specific store is yours to research on that store's own pages.

The sale price can matter too. KDP's ebook list price requirements apply to every ebook, enrolled or not. If you are weighing Amazon against a store of your own, our KDP vs Gumroad vs Etsy guide compares what each platform's own pages say.

A decision table (our judgment, not KDP's)

Nothing in this section is stated by KDP. It is how we would think about the choice, and it is a framework, not a prediction about sales.

  • You want to sell the ebook from your own site or another store now

    Leans toward
    Going wide
    Why we think so
Select would forbid that for the whole 90-day term.
  • The ebook is a lead magnet or a companion to a course

    Leans toward
    Going wide
    Why we think so
You usually want it to travel freely, so exclusivity works against the purpose.
  • Your readers already use Kindle+ and you want your book there

    Leans toward
    Select
    Why we think so
It is the only way in, and the term is short.
  • You are testing a first title and want to see whether Amazon readers respond

    Leans toward
    Select can suit
    Why we think so
A 90-day term is easy to leave by turning off renewal.
  • You hold only some of the rights to the content

    Leans toward
    Going wide, or check first
    Why we think so
KDP requires exclusive rights to the primary content.
  • The book is public domain material

    Leans toward
    Going wide
    Why we think so
KDP says public domain content is not eligible.

Before you enroll

  • Confirm you hold exclusive rights to the ebook's primary content.
  • List every place the ebook is, or will be, sold or given away as a digital file.
  • Check where a free download from your own site would sit: KDP's page says only KDP and public libraries during the term.
  • Look at the Countdown Deal price limits if you plan to run one.
  • Pick one promotion type for the term, and schedule it ahead of time.
  • Note the end date and decide about automatic renewal.
  • Read KDP's current Select pages and the Terms and Conditions it points to.
