Add SuperEbook to VS Code. For GitHub Copilot’s chat, with an API key.

Add SuperEbook’s MCP server to VS Code and GitHub Copilot’s chat can plan and write books in your SuperEbook account, from notes in your workspace or anything you paste.

The key stays out of your files: VS Code asks for it once and stores it securely.

Server URL

https://www.superebook.ai/api/mcp

Paste it exactly as it is, with www.

VS Code connects to SuperEbook over MCP with an API key, set up in its config file, mcp.json.

Before you start

  • A SuperEbook account with Starter, Pro or any credit pack. SuperEbook’s Free plan doesn’t include connecting apps: see plans.
  • VS Code 1.99 or later, with GitHub Copilot.
  • Copilot Business or Enterprise: an admin must turn on the MCP servers in Copilot policy, which is off by default. Copilot Free, Pro, Pro+ and Max aren’t governed by it.
  • An API key from Settings → Connect apps, in the first step below.

Add it with an API key

  1. Create an API key.

    In SuperEbook, open Settings → Connect apps and choose Create API key. Name it after VS Code, then copy it: you see the whole key only once, and it starts ebk_live_. It needs a verified email address.

  2. Run MCP: Open User Configuration.

    From the Command Palette. It opens mcp.json in your VS Code profile, which lists servers under "servers".

  3. Add SuperEbook’s entry and save.

    If the file already has servers, add superebook beside them. The key stays out of the file: ${input:superebook-key} stands in for it, and "password": true hides it as you type.

    Keep the www: VS Code drops the Authorization header when a request is redirected to another address, and the address without www redirects.

    {
      "servers": {
        "superebook": {
          "type": "http",
          "url": "https://www.superebook.ai/api/mcp",
          "headers": {
            "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:superebook-key}"
          }
        }
      },
      "inputs": [
        {
          "type": "promptString",
          "id": "superebook-key",
          "description": "SuperEbook API key (ebk_live_…) from Settings → Connect apps",
          "password": true
        }
      ]
    }
  4. Start the server.

    From its code lens in mcp.json, or run MCP: List Servers, pick superebook and choose Start. VS Code asks for the key the first time and stores it securely. If it asks whether you trust the server, trust it: one you don’t trust doesn’t start.

  5. Start a Local chat.

    Choose New Chat (+), open the Session Target control and pick Local before your first prompt. VS Code 1.142 is making the Copilot harness the default for new chats, and it doesn’t receive servers that need ${input:…} variables.

  6. Turn on its tools.

    Select Configure Tools in the chat input: superebook lists its nine tools. Turn them on, then ask for a book. With a key there’s no sign-in page: VS Code is connected as soon as it sends it.

In a Copilot-harness chat

Copilot-harness chats read the portable file instead: ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json (or $COPILOT_HOME/mcp-config.json), with servers under "mcpServers". It takes no input variables, so the key sits in it in plain text: keep it out of any repository, and never put it in a project’s .mcp.json.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "superebook": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://www.superebook.ai/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer ebk_live_YOUR_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

Stop, restart or remove

Run MCP: List Servers, pick superebook, and choose Stop, Restart or Show Output. To cut its access everywhere, revoke the key in Settings → Connect apps: it stops working at once.

Try it

Once it’s connected, ask for a book in plain words. Planning is free, and the app is told to quote the price and wait for your yes before it writes.

  • “Read docs/onboarding/ and use SuperEbook to plan a how-to guide for new hires.”
  • “Turn the notes in this file into a SuperEbook lead magnet, and show me the chapters first.”
  • “How many SuperEbook credits do I have?”
  • “Check how far my book has got, and get the download links if it’s done.”

If it doesn’t work

The superebook server’s tools don’t show up in a chat
The chat is probably using the Copilot harness, which doesn’t receive servers that need an input variable. Start a new chat and pick Local in the Session Target control, or use ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json.
The server doesn’t start
If VS Code asked whether you trust it and you didn’t, it won’t start. Run MCP: List Servers, pick superebook, and Start it again, or choose Show Output to see why.
MCP is switched off for you
On Copilot Business or Enterprise, the MCP servers in Copilot policy is off until an admin turns it on.
SuperEbook refuses the key
Check the address is https://www.superebook.ai/api/mcp, with www (VS Code drops the key on a redirect), and that the key isn’t revoked in Settings.

For credits, limits and the other messages an app may relay, see if something goes wrong.

More about connecting

Questions, answered plainly.

VS Code now prefers its portable files, .mcp.json and ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json, but they don’t take input variables, so a key there sits in plain text. The user-profile mcp.json, which VS Code keeps for compatibility, asks for the key and stores it securely.

VS Code can sign in to MCP servers through the browser, but nobody has tried that with SuperEbook yet, so this guide uses a key.

The agent VS Code 1.142 is making the default for new chats. It reads MCP servers from the portable files, and VS Code passes it servers from mcp.json except those that need an input variable, such as this guide’s key. Pick Local to use the key VS Code stored.

Yes: the Copilot CLI, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse each read their own config. The GitHub Copilot guide has the entry for each.
